In a bid to expand the knowledge base of the students, Delhi University has taken an initiative to make students read international books consisting of masterpieces and ancient texts.
At a recent academic council meeting, the DU vice - chancellor, professor Yogesh Tyagi, tabled the vision document of international classic books, wherein he said that if a student gets a chance to read even 10 of these masterpieces, their knowledge will be greatly enriched. “There are many such international masterpieces which can be taught to students after getting them translated,” Mr Tyagi said.
An academic council member said, “The vice - chancellor believes that there are more than 200 countries that have rich deposits of works. So, even if some of those classic books are translated at the university level, it would be greatly beneficial for all of us.”
Professor Tyagi is planning to get their translations done and make them available in the university and college libraries. Meanwhile, the varsity is also planning to start a school of journalism of international standards on the lines of Columbia School of Journalism. “This school will have nothing to do with the colleges of the university, which already provide an undergraduate degree in mass communication and journalism. It would be a separate study and research centre,” he added.
