Delhi University rejects RTI plea on PM degree, sparks row
The Delhi University, citing “privacy reasons,” has rejected another RTI query on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree, sparking criticism from Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who said the move “deepens the mystery” surrounding Mr Modi’s educational qualifications.
Mr Kejriwal contended that the university “cannot reject” information sought under the Right To Infor-mation Act by a city-based lawyer and the varsity should write to the PM to seek his permission for releasing the documents. “This deepens the mystery around PM’s degree. If DU feels that it is private info then under RTI Act, DU shud write to PM n seek his permission. DU can’t reject (sic),” he tweeted.
The Right to Information query was filed by Delhi-based lawyer Mohd Irsad. “DU, as a matter of policy, seeks to maintain the privacy of every student as it holds the data pertaining to a student in a fiduciary relationship with the student concerned,” the RTI response from the university said.
In April, Mr Kejriwal had urged the CIC to make public the details of Modi’s educational qualifications. Mr Modi graduated from DU and later completed a post-graduation degree in Gujarat.
