Delhi University students discover herbal cure for diseases
Students and faculty of Delhi University’s Ramjas College have identified vegetable plants that can help fight diarrhoea, tuberculosis, fever, jaundice, and eye and skin diseases.
These vegetable plants are being used by the tribes of Manipur in various types of treatments for years.
The chemical from these plants helps to fight bacteria and viruses. After continuous research, the team found that many of these chemicals have the ability to fight diseases too.
Ten students and two teachers, Dr Pushplata and Khalil M, are working on such an innovation project under the leadership of the college’s department of botany professor, Dr Suresh Kumar.
In order to begin the research for the same, the team had visited the Chandel district of Manipur. “After taking a survey of five villages located in the district, different kinds of floras were collected. A traditional physician from the tribe had informed them that he has been using these plants for medical operations since a very long time,” an official said.
He added that the team has been carrying out a research on these plants in laboratory. “The research showed that some special kinds of chemicals are present in the plants which have the power to fight a variety of bacteria and viruses. The research is almost complete and the report has to be submitted within first week of November,” the official added.
