As the national capital reported first dengue cases, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has started distributing long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets in its jurisdiction to help people avoid mosquito bites.

According to a weekly report released by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which compiles the report on behalf of all civic bodies in the city, one case of dengue has been confirmed from the central zone of the SDMC. “Seven cases of dengue have been reported till date, of which only one case was from Delhi and remaining six patients were from outside the national capital,” said a SDMC official.

The EDMC, meanwhile, has started distributing the long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets in the areas under its jurisdiction last week. According to EDMC’s director (press and information) Yogendra Singh Mann, the corporation will distribute one lakh long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets in the coming weeks. “These nets are laced with insecticide which kills the mosquitoes if they come in contact with it. Distribution of these nets is one of the several initiatives of the EDMC,” said Mr Mann.

All the 64 municipal councillors of the EDMC will get to 1,000 long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets for distribution in their wards. And the remaining nets will be distributed from the headquarters based on requirement of the specific areas. “All the hospitals falling in the EDMC jurisdiction will get one long-lasting insecticidal mosquito net for each bed,” added Mr Mann.

The chemically-treated mosquito nets are provided by Sumitomo Chemical Private Limited under a social security scheme. Clarifying the distribution system, the EDMC will give these chemically-treated mosquito nets first to the homes from where dengue cases were reported last year. These nets are being given free of cost to the residents.
