The families of the accused involved in the brutal murder of dentist Pankaj Narang outside his residence in Vikaspuri on Thursday are distraught as they claim that their sons who have been arrested are the sole breadearners of the family and are innocent.

Prime accused Naseer’s sister Nisha said that her brother is a peaceful person and has never been involved in any sort of crime. She further said that Naseer plays the dholak with his band at weddings to earn money for the family.

“Amir, 20, is my younger brother and drives an e-rickshaw. My brothers are the only source of income for our family. My elder brother Naseer plays dholak for his band and earns money for our family by playing at weddings. Our father Gulfam is a fish-seller. In order to procure fish, he leaves any time and we are always uncertain about his return. Last time he left home was three weeks back and we have no news about him,” she said.

When asked about Naseer’s mother Maeser’s involvement in the incident, his wife Sabina said that she had only gone to the spot to snatch the bats and iron rods from the person who were beating Narang. “Maeser has been arrested for no fault of hers. She had gone there just to stop the violence and she figured in the CCTV video” Sabina said, adding, “On Wednesday night when the boys were celebrating Holi in the field outside the jhuggi, a few others ran to them and said that some fight had taken place. All of them ran along with them.” Sabina claimed they had no idea about what happened until at 2 am when the police came and took Naseer away.

Just two houses away, another accused Ameer Khan’s mother, Shanno, was howling as she wanted her son to be back with her. “My son was sleeping right next to me when the police came and said they want my son for ‘poochtach’. I went with him, but eventually the police arrested him,” Shanno said.
