The Jamia Millia Islamia University has become the first university in the national capital to be granted community college status by the University Grants Commission under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra (DDU-KK) scheme. The varsity will be providing the students with four different vocational courses.

BA vocational in medical laboratory sciences and BA vocational in medical electro physiology are being run at the physiotherapy department while BA vocational in solar energy and diploma in refrigeration and air conditioning are being run at the physics department and university polytechnic, respectively.

The DDU-KK community college status has been awarded under a skill development and training centre scheme of the government of India to ensure employability and to empower the youth.

In the recent past, two new low-cost but highly developed laboratories of DDU-KK have been built at the university. The labs have been developed in order to train the lab science students in histo-pathological, micro- biological, haematological and biochemical techniques and medical electrophysiology students in electrocardiography, electromayography, evoked potential, polysomnography and electroencephalography techniques.

All the equipments required for the labs have been procured from the funds that UGC had granted for the Kaushal Kendra. “The USP of these courses is that they are multiple entry and exit programmes. If someone leaves the course in a year, he or she would receive a diploma certificate, advance diploma in 2 years and undergraduate degree in 3 years. In this way, a diploma student can get admission to an advance diploma or undergraduate course too,” said Dr Ejaz Hussain, director of physiotherapy department at Jamia.

Jamia vice chancellor, professor Talat Ahmad said, “These courses will be greatly beneficial to students from poor backgrounds.”
