Delhi University on Wednesday welcomed an anxious batch of undergraduate students who flocked to their respective colleges to begin their three-year long academic journey.

The smartly dressed freshers in most of the colleges seemed visibly excited on their first day as they received a grand welcome not only by their colleges but also by their seniors. Kirorimal College Student Union organised a street play for freshers while Ramjas College laid out a red carpet for them. Sri Ram College of Commerce seniors welcomed the new batch with yellow flowers.

Seniors also eased students into their new college life with the third year students breaking status quo to show them around the campus. Many freshers were also seen clicking selfies with seniors followed by checking out the cafeterias and eating joints.

“We got a chance to interact with our seniors and I must say they are very helpful and nice. Even the orientation was amazing and so were the teachers. We were being told about the college history too. I had specially shopped before coming to college because DU is also about a little bit of trend and fashion. Till now we like the environment. It is a new phase of life and I have already made a few friends here,” said Hansraj College student Riya.

The walls of DU’s North Campus were also plastered with “anti-ragging” posters this year. The university officials while making sure no fresher is ragged, had maintained extra vigil at the eating joints by deploying volunteers in colleges and increasing police patrolling outside colleges. In addition, two joint control rooms have also been set up each at South campus and North campus to make sure no student is ragged.

On the other hand, students also seemed nervous because of the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), which was introduced last year. Since it is the second consecutive year the students will be studying under this system, they also looked at their syllabus in order to get over any confusion.

“Although guidelines have been displayed on the DU website, I still faced confusion since we all are new to this. Thankfully last year students have studied under the system, so they are there to help us out with the same. Also I have gone through the syllabus of the current semester and the whole course structure, just to make sure my basics are clear,” said Aniket Garg of Kirori Mal College.
