A three-year-old girl fell into a running drain in Southeast Delhi’s Sriniwaspuri area on Thursday and till late in the evening, the rescue teams couldn’t trace her.

The girl, identified as Kiran, fell into the drain on Thursday afternoon when she was playing with her five-year-old brother Sawan. When she was running around, she fell in the drain as a portion of the slab which was covering the drain was broken from the edge, the police said. After her brother raised an alarm, their mother also jumped inside but due to the flow of water, Kiran couldn’t be found. “A call was received today at 12.20 pm about a girl, Kiran, falling in a drain in Sriniwaspuri. A fire tender was rushed to the spot but even till late evening, there was no trace of the girl’s body,” said an officer from Delhi Fire Services. Fire tender, emergency response vehicles, divers and the local police were pressed into service but the girl could not be found till late evening. The girl’s family alleged that there were many complaints made to the concerned department about the open drain but nobody took any action.

The drain falls under the jurisdiction of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
