More than 55,000 licences seized by police for traffic violations
Latest data released by the Delhi police has revealed almost 56,000 driving licences have been seized by the traffic personnel in the last 75 days for traffic violations.
The Delhi traffic police seized 55,800 licences between December 16, 2015 and February 29, 2016. On an average, 15 unruly drivers were prosecuted every hour for rash and dangerous driving in the national capital after the Delhi police adopted the Supreme Court’s order to seize driving licences of errant drivers for a minimum of three months. Out of the 55,800 licenses, 744 licences were seized in one day and 31 licences were seized in an hour.
The traffic personnel have seized a total of 27,000 licences for dangerous and rash driving along with imposing a fine of up to Rs 1,000 on the errant drivers. On average, the police seized 360 licences in a day and 15 in an hour. On the other hand, 32,250 licenses were seized for violating traffic rules such as jumping red light in the same period, so on average, 430 licences were seized in a day and 18 licences in an hour.
Speaking on the initiative’s effectiveness, special commissioner of pol-ice (traffic) Muktesh Ch-ander said: “With the im-plementation of the apex court’s order to seize licences for breaking traffic rules, Delhiites have definitely become aware and have started following rules. Although not much time has passed since its implementation, we have been observing and a trend will soon start where people will abide by all traffic rules.”
