The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has decided to teach nationalism to students studying in its primary schools. To decide guideline for teaching nationalism, the NDMC will be holding an interactive session with around 100 principals of its schools. According to chairperson of NDMC’s education committee Mamta Nagpal, the teaching module will be decided based on the suggestions received during the session.

Ms Nagpal told this newspaper that a lot of talk and debate on this topic is going on across the country so the NDMC has decided to teach students about nationalism. “Principals from our 100 schools will come together for an interactive session to decide how to teach nationalism to small children studying in NDMC’s primary schools,” Ms Nagpal added.

During the interactive session, principals will share and suggest ideas on how nationalism can be incorporated in the existing syllabus of the NDMC schools. “We are not going to make any change in the existing curriculum. Principals and officials of the education department will deliberate on how to include nationalism as a subject in the existing system without making any change in the syllabus. Principals and teachers should tell stories of nationalism and freedom struggle, which will help in nation-building,” said Ms Nagpal.

The NDMC believes that teaching or sharing stories about great freedom fighters among small children would help a lot in building nationalistic characters in them. “Early introduction to nationalism will have lasting impact on children and thus on the nation’s future,” said the chairperson of the education committee.
