Online attendance system at EDMC

To ensure punctuality of senior officers, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has launched an online attendance system for them. EDMC commissioner Mohanjeet Singh had recently directed his IT department to start an online attendance system for all the heads of departments in the civic body.

Apart from existing biometric system of marking attendance, senior officers and heads of department (HoDs) have to mark their presence in the office through a new online system that can be accessed through computer. The biometric attendance system was introduced by the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in August 2008.

EDMC director (press and information) Yogendra Singh Mann said the municipal Commissioner has ordered online attendance of heads of departments at the earliest. “Online attendance can be marked only through the personal computers of the officers at the office. Online attendance system will work along with the exiting biometric attendance system,” added Mr Mann. Currently, apart from teachers working in the EDMC schools, all the employees and officers, including the commissioner, mark their presence on duty through the biometric attendance system. The online attendance system is currently in force for around 40 heads of departments.

Sources said that in future other senior officers would be also asked to mark their attendance through the online system along with the existing biometric system.

Explaining the need for an online attendance system along with the existing biometric attendance system, another senior officer said, “Since the introduction of the biometric attendance system in 2008 we have ensured that staff and officers reach office on time, but it failed to solve the purpose as many of them not found at their desks. It was found that several employees, including officers and heads of departments, after marking their attendance were missing from their designated desks. To ensure that after marking their biometric attendance they should sit in their offices and start working, the online attendance system is to be introduced,” he added.
