Pubs near Delhi University to get own alcometers
As a part of their campaign against drunk driving, the Delhi police will start a new initiative of providing alcometers (device to measure the amount of alcohol a person has consumed) from Friday to pubs and nightclubs near the Delhi University.
The initiative, which is the brainchild of deputy commissioner of police (north) Madhur Verma, will be started in his district from Friday and will soon be widely spread in the other districts of the national capital.
“Mainly youth go the night clubs near the university area and indulge in heavy drinking. After drinking, they drive back home and may encounter accidents. Through alcometers, they will know the amount of alcohol they have consumed and will refrain from driving if the alcohol content exceeds the maximum level on the meter” said DCP Madhur Verma, adding, “We are also mulling to rope in app-based taxis to drop inebriated persons back home.”
The night clubs will be given the responsibility to make every person who is drinking to take the alcometer test and check the amount of alcohol they have consumed. “The pubs will get a certificate also from Delhi police as a token of appreciation,” said Mr Verma.
Mr Verma further said there will be extra patrolling from 7pm to till the pubs close down for the day and those persons who drive even after the alcometer reads above the maximum level will be prosecuted and their vehicles impounded.
“Drunk driving is an offence. Not only does it put the driver in danger but it is a threat to the lives of others as well. Introducing alcometers in pubs will also make party-goers aware that they should be drinking responsibly. This initiative in a way will also make the area safe and less accident prone,” said the officer.
