Rs 350 crore saved in construction of 3 city flyovers

The Aam Aadmi Party government has saved several hundred crores in the city’s flyover projects since it came to power last year.

The Aam Aadmi Party government has saved several hundred crores in the city’s flyover projects since it came to power last year. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has repeatedly asserted that his government will not waste taxpayers’ money by delaying the flyover projects and constructing two flyovers for the cost of one.

The AAP government saved Rs 350 crore in construction of three elevated corridors on the 23-km Vikaspuri to Wazirabad signal-free elevated corridor in Outer Delhi that seeks to decongest the area and reduce travel time drastically.

The 3.8-km elevated corridor on Outer Ring Road from Madhuban Chowk to Mukarba Chowk, part of the signal-free Vikaspuri-Wazirabad project in Delhi, was built for Rs 120 crore less than the sanctioned amount. The sanctioned cost of the third phase was over Rs 420 crore, but the Delhi government said it had completed this section of the project for Rs 300 crore only.

The second phase of the signal-free project, a 3.9-km stretch from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk, was inaugurated on January 17. The public works department had saved Rs 123.05 crore in the construction of that phase.

In addition, the AAP government saved Rs 100 crore on Azadpur to Prembari Pul elevated corridor, which was inaugurated in November and has eased traffic congestion on that section of the Ring Road. The 1.6-km elevated corridor was constructed to decongest areas like Ashok Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and Wazirpur and allow unhindered traffic flow along the entire 44-km Ring Road.

The Kejriwal government also constructed the city’s first 24.2-metre wide corridor from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh for residents of Janakpuri, Vikaspuri, Tilak Nagar, Jwalaheri, Paschim Vihar and Bhera Enclave among others. The corridor, which was constructed within three years, has five signal-free intersections, saving 12 minutes of travel time for the commuters. Of the sanctioned cost of Rs 559 crore, the flyover was constructed in Rs 450 crore, saving Rs 110 crore.
