Delhi police sub-inspector kills woman before shooting himself to death
After killing a 27-year-old woman, a Delhi police sub-inspector reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself at 11.45 am at a park in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka Sector 4 on Sunday.
The officer, identified as Vijendra Bishnoi (33), a na-tive of Haryana’s Jhajjhar district, allegedly was involved in an extramarital affair with the deceased, Nikita Chauhan, who worked for a local daily newspaper and had been living in southwest Delhi’s Sagarpur. Nikita had joined the newspaper in 2009 and a year later she had got married to a person of her choice. However, she is believed to have separated from her husband.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Vijendra was an accused in a domestic violence case registered on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife with both the Haryana and Delhi police. The victim too had recently lodged a complaint of rape against him, but later withdrew it.
Being absent from duty for sometime in between, Vijendra reported for work on Saturday and was issued his service gun. He left for investigating a robbery case the next day, but instead called Nikita to meet him. According to a witness, they both arrived together by an e-rickshaw at the park. According to police sources, Vijendra and Nikita were sitting together and talking in the park when suddenly he pulled out his gun and shot her in thigh. “Writhing in pain, the woman started screaming. As she got up, Vijendra fired two more shots at her chest from point blank range.”
India Against Corruption convener Sarbajit Roy, who lives in a nearby apar-tment, said: “I called a PCR after I came to know about the incident and asked the police to get an ambulance as well. On calling the Dwarka North police station, I learnt that the information had not reached them. The police reached the spot 30 minutes later after the woman had succumbed to her injuries.”
By the time people gathered at the spot, Vijendra pointed the gun towards himself and fired two rounds. “Both the bullets hit him on his chest,” a witness told this reporter. Locals called up the police and both were rushed to a hospital where the woman was declared brought dead and Vijendra was reported to be in a critical condition. He was then moved to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where he died at 4.50 pm.
Vijendra is said to have joined the force as a sub-inspector in 2008 and was presently posted at the west Delhi’s Ranhoula police station. He was all-egedly involved in an intimate relationship with the victim for the past three years, an official said, adding that the relatives of both had been informed.
