Release of JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar from jail on Thursday, a day after he was granted interim bail, triggered widespread joy in the JNU campus, and teachers and students of other universities in the National Capital Region also welcomed the decision as well.

Delighted to hear the news, Delhi University’s Meera Nair said: “More than anyone else, JNU students and teachers would be happy to have Kanhaiya back on campus. It is great news as finally after so many hurdles he has been granted bail. It was obvious for him to get bail since he is not a culprit. I am sure that things will soon be normal on the campus and till then we would keep on fighting for what is right.”

Agreeing with Ms. Nair Itish Batra, a student of Maharaja Agrasen College, said: “We are happy to hear about the decision by the courts. I hope that justice would be done to him and the sedition charges would be dropped as well. Although the struggle is a long one, JNU has won half of the battle.”

However, there are students who feel that no justice can compensate for the injustice done to the students whose career has been spoiled due to the whole controversy.

A Jamia Millia Islamia student, Khyati Gupta, said: “I am happy that he has been finally been granted bail, but at the same time I am saddened by the fact that the whole controversy is going to stay with him for life and for a student nothing could be worse. Mere involvement in a case of sedition is enough to spoil his career. Also, the fact that he has had to serve a difficult time in jail for no crime is troubling. There is hope for justice. But after all that these people have been through, injustice has already been done. Any justice now cannot compensate. They might have been granted bail but their public image is yet to change.”
