A 25-year-old woman from the Northeast who works in an MNC in Gurgaon allegedly hid in the ladies’ bathroom in Saket Select City Walk mall in South Delhi to avoid her stalker, the police said on Saturday.

According to a senior police official, the accused has been identified as Rajan Thakur (26), who worked with the woman in the same office and had proposed marriage but the woman had refused. After being rejected, Thakur would regularly call to threaten and abuse her, the police said.

Earlier this week, Padma (name changed) had gone to the mall in the morning to shop when she received a call from the accused who said he was in the mall and could see her. “The woman panicked and quickly went inside a shop. After some time, when she came out of the shop, she noticed Thakur who then allegedly started following her all around the mall. The woman finally entered the ladies’ bathroom, where she stayed for over an hour to avoid him. When she came out from the loo, Thakur was not there but, out of fear, she stayed in the mall till 8 pm. She thought Thakur would probably find her again if she went out of the mall,” said the police official.

On reaching home, the woman called her friends over to stay with her, but around 2 am Thakur came to the woman’s house and started ringing the bell. “Thakur started hurling abuse and threatened to kill her if she didn’t open the door. The woman immediately called the police, who came and arrested the accused,” said the official.

“I was so scared that I stayed in the mall the entire day to avoid him. After reaching home I called my friends to my house as I was insecure. Thakur came to my house at 1.50 am and started threatening me,” the woman alleged, adding, “He used to call me regularly and mentally torture me by saying that he would ruin my life.”

Thakur was booked under IPC Sections 354(D), 451, and 506.
