‘Kal’kal ki kahani
Talented singer Kenishaa Francis shares a recipe for her favourite Christmas snack, kalkal
Kalkal
Ingredients
Maida 1/2 kg, butter 200 gm, sugar (powdered) 200 gm, Vanilla essence 4 drops, eggs 2 nos, a pinch of salt, edible colours 4 different ones (optional) and oil for deep frying.
Method Mix the butter and powdered sugar together. Beat nicely, until blended.
Add Vanilla essence and a pinch of salt and beat again.
Beat eggs till fluffy. Add this to the butter-sugar mix and blend well.
Add maida to this mixture and knead well, until you get a smooth consistency.
Divide the dough into four parts (if you’re using the food colouring). To each part, add an edible colour and knead well.
Make a small marble-sized ball of the dough and press it on the inner side of a fork and roll in, without pressing hard.
Repeat with the rest of the dough.
Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Drop a few rolls into the oil in batches of the same colour and fry till golden brown or cooked. Do not over fry as kalkals change colour.
