Varun Dhawan to star in a costume drama

From masala movies to rom-coms to dramas, there are not many genres left for this Student of the Year to prove his mantle. Now we hear that Varun Dhawan is all set to do his first costume drama. And who better than his mentor Karan Johar to produce what promises to be the most lavish Hindi period-film to be made in Bollywood.

Titled Ranbhoomi, it will be directed by Karan’s protégé and Varun’s buddy Shashank Khaitan.

“Ranbhoomi will be my first costume drama. I am very excited about it. It’s actually a first for all of us. Shashank hasn’t done a costume film before. Our two films together Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya were very far removed from the world of horses, swords and warriors like it will be in Ranbhoomi. And Karan hasn’t produced a costume drama in his entire career,” says Varun.

Interestingly, Karan was supposed to do his maiden costume drama Shuddhi, first with Hrithik Roshan in the lead and later with Salman Khan in the same role. However, both the actors opted out and the project fell through.
