Let's talk about sex
Pia Bajpai is an outspoken girl. By her own admission, her next character of Julie in Mirza Juuliet, is a bold UP girl, who doesn’t shy away from cussing or talking about sex. In a freewheeling chat, the actress talks about her films and more. Excerpts from an interview:
What is Mirza Juuliet all about?
It is a very happy and a cute love story. There is some politics happening in between two families, and we have presented that in a nice way. I believe the X factor of the film is the fact that it is based in a small town called Mirzapur. One will relate to this love story. The film has nothing to do with Romeo and Juliet romance.
How difficult was it for you to do a bold role after playing a subtle role in Laal Rang?
It was not at all tough. My character Julie Shukla is from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, much like I am. Apart from the abuses and cuss words I have used in the film, I am like Julie Shukla in many ways. I feel UP girls have a certain rawness in their personality. They might look sweet from the outside, but they are the opposite on the inside. The minute I got the narration of the film, I decided to do it. I could relate to it so much.
What about Julie struck a chord with you?
Julie Shukla is a very bold girl who talks about sex and abuses freely. I was brought up with my brothers and there was no other female member in the house. Whatever Julie speaks in the film, is her day-to-day language. There was no one to stop her. She is also curious about many things because of her protected upbringing.
Sex has always been a pivotal part in all your three Hindi films…
(Laughs) God knows why! Sometimes I wonder how directors come to me with a script where sex is an important part of my character. It is mere coincidence. Maybe when I talk about sex, I look cute.
Why you are so picky in choosing your films?
After I did Laal Rang, I did Virgins, which went viral and I was so happy. I just did one amazing Tamil film. I am always picky, because you are as good as your last film. Laal Rang was a great film, so I don’t want to rush. I don’t have to answer anyone. Whenever I go for film narrations, I get a gut feeling about it being good or bad. I got good vibes from Laal Rang, The Virgins, and Mirza Juuliet so I did them. I want to feel good about my films.
