Dare to be different

Actress Kalki Koechlin stands out from the crowd, both for her looks and talent.

Theatre and film actress Kalki Koechlin is known more for her independent crossover films rather than run-of-the-mill commercial ones. Says the actress, “I am getting more offers from indie crossover films, which is a niche market, but my heart lies in both (commercial and indie films). I am lucky to have been offered roles by Zoya Akhtar and Ayan Mukerji and will be working with them soon.”

She adds, “I do not consciously try to choose arty films. I love to do films with good content, where my character is easily relatable to me.”

Talking about her upcoming release Mantra, Kalki shares, “The film is based during the liberalisation years of the ‘90s. I play Pia, a chef and independent girl, who is keen to pursue her dreams.”

Kalki confesses that she would love to act in Pyaasa if the film were to be remade. Reportedly, Aamir was planning to remake the classic. “I am not aware that Aamir is planning to remake Pyaasa,” she says, “But please convey to him that he should cast me in the film!”

Kalki also says the role of Sister Nivedita appeals to her and that she would love to play her if a biopic is made. “I have read her life history and it has appealed a lot to me. Since I look like a firang, this role will definitely suit me,” she says.
