2.0 chugs on

The film has already made Rs 370 crore in pre-release deals including sale of satellite, and other digital rights.

Despite scathing reviews from a section of the critics, director Shankar Shanmugham’s magnum opus 2.0 has grossed over Rs 400 crore worldwide and is still doing well in the Hindi belt as well. The film which came in for some criticism for a lack of story and only special effects has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in the dubbed Hindi version as well.

The film has now over 115 crore in its kitty in the six days that it has spent at the turnstiles and is not slowing down as some box office pundits predicted. The film starring Akshay Kumar and Rajinikanth was earlier thought to be the biggest grosser ever before it released. But the negative reviews slowed down the pace.

“This is Akshay’s biggest film if one looks at the worldwide gross. At the current rate, it will cross his biggest hit of the year Gold as well. The film is still showing the stamina as a lot of the younsters are still going to see it in the theatres for its VFX. The first day collections of the film stood at a whopping Rs 64 crore, 12 crore more than what the Thugs of Hindostan opened,” says a trade pundit. The film has already made Rs 370 crore in pre-release deals including sale of satellite, and other digital rights.

Billed at a cost of Rs 450 crore plus promotions, 2.0 needed to collect around 200 crore at the India box office in various languages to get into the profit zone.
