New terrain
Director of the Dhoom series, Sanjay Gadhvi, feels the superhero culture in India has not been established and such a film would not appeal to the public. “This is unexplored territory. Other than Rakesh Roshan’s brilliant rendition of a superhero in Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish, and Remo’s parody Flying Jatt, there has been nothing to show that India has a consumer base for such movies. To pioneer a project in this fashion would be quite risky,” he cautions.
Vikramaditya Motwane, who is currently making Bhavesh Joshi, a superhero film, does not agree with Gadhvi. Motwane feels every Indian actor is a superhero. “Salman Khan has always been a superhero in every film. Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan have played superheroes and so has Tiger Shroff. And now, Harsh (Harshvardhan Kapoor) will be playing a superhero,” he stresses.
Sanjay Chhel, maker of Khoobsoorat and Dil to Bacha Hai Ji among others, feels that superheroes require fresh faces and fresh talent. “Our stars come with the baggage of images,” he reasons.
Nevertheless, an Avengers movie with actors from the Indian film industry would be a refreshing take on the franchise.
