No coolie outfit for Varun Dhawan?
If rumours are to be believed Varun Dhawan, the illustrious son of director David Dhawan won’t be wearing the coolie’s outfit in the Dhawans’ second collaborative venture Coolie No 1.
A source very close to the project informs, “I don’t think Varun would look cool in that red outfit which Govinda wore as a coolie in the original Coolie No 1 or Amitabh Bachchan in Coolie. Those were different times. Nowadays if you go to a railway station in Mumbai the coolies don’t dress up like that, in fact they are no longer called coolies.”
Then arises the question, why is the new avatar of David Dhawan-Govinda starrer featuring Dhawan’s ‘cool’ son, called Coolie No.1?
The question in point here is not one of cultural change, the coolie dress code has undergone in this country since the time Coolie No 1 and Coolie were originally made in the 1990s. The question is of our current stars looking ‘cool’ no matter what they do. And credibility is damned.
A filmmaker who is currently working on an ambitious project with Salman Khan says, “Cultural identity is not a desirable thing any more. You show your Muslim hero in a traditional pathani suit or with a beard, you are accused of stereotyping. I wanted Salman to be dressed according to his character’s cultural background, but I was told it won’t be ‘cool’ to do so.”
The whole scenario brings us to ask, who defines what is cool or not? The fashion police, the moral police, the costume designers or the hero who wears what he wants to wear?
Coolie no one else
It seems that Govinda is not happy with someone else playing the lead in his 1995 release Coolie No 1 remake. The actor made it clear when he came to launch his sister, social activist and actress Kamini Khanna’s book - ‘Kamini Aisi Hi hai’.
“I have come to publicise my sister’s book. No other film will be publicised,” said Govinda to a query that propped up about the remaking or his film Coolie No 1.
It is known that Govinda and Salman Khan have been part of David Dhawan’s most successful films released in 90s. David’s second film with his son Varun Dhawan — Judwaa 2 after Main Tera Hero was superhit at the box office.
Interestingly, in one of the songs that was reprised in Judwaa 2 — Chalti Hai Kya Nau Se Barah, had Govinda’s name in the lyrics. However that was avoided in the remake. Earlier the song had lyrics like ‘Film haseen woh jaan-e-man hai, Yeh filmon mein number one hai… Govinda Hai Hero Usaka Aur Maadhuri Heroine Hai,’ but those were the only lines from the song that got omitted in the remake. This obviously did not go well with Govinda and the cold war between David and Govinda intensified.
On the other hand, Salman Khan went on to do a cameo in Judwaa 2. It is to be seen if the Govinda-David war ends with yet another cameo in Coolie No 1 remake bankrolled by Vashu Bhagnani.
