Mirzapur rooted in our reality'
The third original Indian fiction film after Inside Edge and Breathe to hit the screens on a web platform is Mirzapur. Directed by Karan Anushman, the crime thriller series touches upon a topic closer to home as it deals with the dreaded drug lords of Purvanchal, Mirzapur.
“This is our world and it is our story. By our, I mean an Indian thing rooted deep in what our reality is. We had the resources to make it look great and be right up there on a technical level. We have used the same equipment and our technicians are as good as Hollywood,” says Karan.
That aside, talking about the story the director says the best part is that the characters aren’t lying or pretending to be someone else.
“The more true you are to yourself in terms of who these people are and where they come from, is when the story will actually resonate with the global audience. Especially, in the case of Mirzapur,” he adds.
Ask him how is that going to happen and pat comes the reply, “Because it is such an alien world. On paper, a lot of American team people didn’t understand many things because they don’t have the cultural context. But when the same guys saw the show, they loved every moment of it. They were gushing in their praise of how it had turned out. They did not get it on paper because once you pull down the world and start connecting on an emotional level with the characters, then it doesn’t matter,” he says.
The first season of Mirzapur, touted as a thrilling and gripping crime drama stars an ensemble cast of Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Divyendu Sharma, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Gaur, and Amit Sial, promising a powerhouse of talent.
