Showcasing the dark side of rejection, Kabir Singh is about a young surgeon who falls down the path of self-destruction after his ex-lover is married to someone else. The actor who has played his fair shares of twisted characters feels a special attachment to his role in the Sandeep Reddy’s directorial.

Talking about his character Shahid says, “It is an edgy character. I have played an insane character in Haider also Tommy Singh (in Udta Punjab) was on the edgy side. However, the insanity in this man, is because this man has a broken heart. This character goes through great emotional highs and lows as well.”

Most often than not, remakes get lost in translation and hence Shahid has to put in extra efforts to showcase the role which is played by Vijay Deverakonda in the original film. “It is really very difficult doing a remake. I had to rediscover the emotional journey of Vijay. As this was Vijay’s debut film and he did it with his point of view. I personally had to put in the same intensity without losing the inherent beauty of the story as well the character.”

Director Sandeep Reddy doesn’t believe in sugarcoating the emotions and hence Shahid will be seen using cuss words on screen. Explaining how it’s important to the storyline, Shahid says, “When you watch the entire film you will understand his attitude. Yes, he is a crazy character. But it is much more than that. To me, Kabir Singh is a cathartic film. Cinema will not go far if we made only good films. Tommy Singh has done worse things than Kabir Singh, but he was liked. I would not say it’s a dark film but yes when it comes to depicted a story truthfully so we have to do so.”

But can this land the film in trouble with the censor board? “We're hoping to get U/A certificate. There is nothing that needed to be censored. The censor board should also give importance to it as it’s an honest depiction,” the actor quips.
