Indian web shows look poor: Abhishek Sharma

Switching gears to the rise of the digital platforms in India, Abhishek finds that Indian web series look inexpensive and gareeb (poor).

Director Abhishek Sharma, known for having made Tere Bin Laden and Parmanu, finds that comedy is his strong suit.

“I feel very comfortable with comic stuff. The comic flavour, while making a film for me, is like another language. Even while directing serious subject like Parmanu, I somehow mixed some comedy stuff into it,” the filmmaker says.

However, his next project after The Zoya Factor may not be comedic in nature. “It’s too early for me to say anything. This next venture that I am doing is with Zee Studios. So whether I will be launching a fresh face and if it’s a comedy will all be announced at the right time,” he reveals.

Meanwhile, Abhishek is looking to collaborate with Parmanu actor John Abraham. “John and I are in talks over many subjects. It could be anything, comedy, romantic, serious, etc. All I can say is that John and I will definitely do a film together soon,” says the director, who is all praise for the actor. “He is good at comedy. But we both have many stories in mind, so our collaboration can be anything.”

Switching gears to the rise of the digital platforms in India, Abhishek finds that Indian web series look inexpensive and gareeb (poor). “Somehow our web series are not up to the International production value, I feel. The Indian web series look like television shows. Our films production value has risen up, and the increase in the budget has improved our films technically as well,” he opines.

“The content on digital platforms does not seem to be all that incredible. Since there is no censor certification needed, a few shows unhesitatingly serve vulgarity as well. Makers need to know their responsibility if they continue making such stuff, since censor certification may be introduced sooner or later,” he further warns.
