Madhur Bhandarkar tight-lipped about Indira's identity

The director refuses to reveal whether the character of Indira Gandhi will even be seen in his upcoming film Indu Sarkar.

Madhur Bhandarkar, who is known to articulate controversial issues through his films, is currently busy shooting for his film Indu Sarkar, which is based on the Emergency period, from 1975 to 1977, during Indira Gandhi’s time as Prime Minister. However, he still remains tight-lipped about who will actually play the role of the dynamic Prime Minister in his film.

“I don’t want to talk about that right now. My film is a personal take of the lead characters in the backdrop of Emergency. When the film releases, one will come to know what exactly it is,” said the director, when asked about the identity of his eponymous character.

Indeed, he is not even ready to confirm if the erstwhile Prime Minister’s character will feature in the film at all. Says Madhur, “It’s a fictional film and one has to see it to know what it is about. There is no other way to know what’s going on there on the screen.”

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country in 1975. Indu Sarkar stars Kirti Kulhari and Neil Nitin Mukesh in pivotal roles in the film. This will be Madhur’s first attempt at a period drama.

He says, “It’s a different take for me as it is a different subject than what I usually work on. It’s about a girl who stammers and is also a poet. So the film is from her point of view.” Indu Sarkar, which is widely shot in the cities Delhi and Pune, is set to release by mid 2017.
