Rajinikanth has finally voiced his opinion on the burning language issue. He joined the anti-Hindi imposition brigade to stand by all those in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere who oppose making Hindi the common language of India.

“A common language not just for India but any country is good for its unity and progress and growth. Unfortunately, in India it cannot be done. So you cannot impose any language,” Rajini said.

He went on to make clear his position that no language can be imposed on people. “If Hindi is imposed, not just Tamil Nadu, but the whole of South India would oppose it. Even many states in northern parts would not accept it.”

Rajini’s line supporting the stand common in the southern states against the imposition of Hindi as the common language may have surprised only those who may have believed that the Superstar would support the BJP stand on Hindi as expressed by Home Minister Amit Shah on Hindi Divas.

Hashtags like #StopHindiImperialism #StopHindiImposition #MakeMyLanguageOfficial began trending on Twitter with netizens targeting and commenting against Shah’s views. Rajini’s stand is with the same people who do not support the imposition of any language on others.

Rajini was also quizzed about the banner culture in Tamil Nadu when the Petta star came on a break from the shooting of Darbar.  “The hoardings and banner culture must be completely abolished. I have already instructed my fans not to place banners,” he said. Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has also opposed the statement of Amit  Shah and released a video with his views.

Rajinikanth is presently acting in Darbar, where he will be essaying a cop from Mumbai. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film has Nayanthara romancing Rajini.  Santhosh Sivan joins hands with Rajinikanth after a gap of 28 years, their earlier film together having been the cult classic Thalapathi in 1991. Anirudh teams up with Rajini for music for the second time after Petta.
