Satte Pe Satta remake at sixes and sevens
Eight years ago, Sanjay Dutt along with the now-defunct Ashtavinayak Productions had planned to remake the iconic Amitabh Bachchan-Hema Malini starrer Satte Pe Satta with Dutt essaying Bachchan’s character. The original Satte Pe Satta directed by Raj N Sippy itself was an unauthorised remake of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
“Soham Shah of Kaal and Luck fame (not to be confused with the actor from Ship of Theseus - Sohum Shah) was to direct the remake. Ashtavinayak had also approached Madhuri to play the lead opposite Sanjay Dutt and had finalised on Karisma Kapoor. But after Ashtavinyak had several financial and legal issues with producer Harshad Mehta aka Rajbhai being arrested, the film went into cold storage as even Dutt had to serve jail under the Arms Act. However, Dutt still owns partial rights of the film. Farah Khan too was planning to remake the same film with Shah Rukh Khan a year before Dutt announced it,” informs a source.
Now, suddenly there are two producers vying to remake the same film directed by Raj N Sippy. And, there seems to be a big legal issue. While we are not sure if Dutt is still one of those bidding to make the film but two public notices have been served by different law firms (Naik & Naik and Clasis Law & Associates) for their respective producer clients.
“Ashtavinayak could have sold off the rights to some producers but we can be assured that there will only be one remake and that too with the person who has been given the rights first,” says a trade source.
Which makes us wonder if the Rohit Shetty-Farah Khan collaboration is one of the films in question.
