I want to see couples supporting each other, says Sonakshi Sinha
Sonakshi Sinha is all set to take on television once again, to up the oomph quotient on the dance reality show, Nach Baliye. We caught up with the first-time judge of the show to know what attracted her to the small screen, her movies, and more:
Were you made an offer that was difficult to refuse for the show?
I actually enjoyed my first experience with TV on Indian Idol Junior, where I was judging kids. I was looking for something else that I could do on television, and this came my way. It was hard for me to say no, not because of anything else, but because it’s a dance-based reality show. I’m fond of dancing myself, and have been known for my dancing and the songs I’ve had in my films over the years. It just felt like a perfect fit.
What do you personally look for in couples while judging them?
It will be wonderful to see the couples, who are in different stages of their relationships, perform in the show. There are coupled who have just started their relationship and then there are those who’ve been married for 20-30 years and are still going strong. So I think it’s going to be a great experience to see how they put their relationship through the performance. I will look for how much they support each other, when it comes to putting up a performance, because some of them are non-dancers, and are probably doing a show like this for the first time. It’s not an easy thing to present an act in front of so many people, and in front of a panel.
Being a judge, are you wary of couples who fake a relationship to land the show? How will you make sure the credibility of the show is maintained?
So far, I’ve not been in a situation like this. The couples in this season, I can guarantee, have been in the public eye, as have their relationships. There’s complete authenticity to their equations and relationships. That is the very soul of Nach Baliye. There may have been one or two incidents, where the couple may not have been real, but this season, they’ve made sure the participants are authentic, who’ve been with each other for a while. The channel has a team that does all the research.
You seem to be getting applauded for Noor. Are a lot of women identifying with it?
I think it’s about time films with female protagonists should be widely accepted. The kind of feedback I’ve got for Noor and its trailer has been fantastic. Women just automatically connect when they see you portray a strong character on screen, and they feel a sense of belonging to it; that’s where girl power comes in. Noor is a wonderful character right from the word go. When Sunil Sippy narrated the film, I instantly called him to say I’m doing it; it was that simple for me. It was that instinctive. I really wanted to be a part of this film. It’s very special to me.
Reports suggest you will be performing with Justin Beiber in his Mumbai concert…
It’s very preliminary. Talks are still on, so it’s very early for me to say anything. I love his music, and I’m very happy that he’s performing in Mumbai. If I get to be with him on-stage, I think it will be a wonderful thing.
