Twiteratti ask Rohit Roy to leave country after his 'enraged I'm Indian living in India' tweet

Rohit was trolled and abused for his tweets supporting 'Padmavati', with users mocking his 'lack of work' and calling him 'dhongi'.

Mumbai: Without taking any names, actor Rohit Roy on Tuesday said that a film is being used by some groups in the country to gain political authority.

In an oblique reference to the controversy-struck 'Padmavati', Rohit took to Twitter to condemn the protests and threats against the film's director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead actor Deepika Padukone.

"A film is being used by some for political leverage.. Does calling to behead a gentleman in any way legal, tolerable or democratic? How then are the powers that be quiet about it? No arrests, no warnings even! History cannot be distorted, no question about it..." Rohit wrote.

The actor said he was a "proud Indian", who held the country's history in high esteem.

"I have to say that this polarisation is going to debilitate India and bring it to its knees... What about this 'mother' of ours?" he added.

Rohit had tweeted on Monday that he was sad and "frustrated" to be an Indian citizen in today's times.

"For the first time, I'm sad, frustrated, enraged etc etc that I'm an Indian living in India... Never thought I'd ever say that. Indeed, very sad... Jai Hind," he had written.

However, Rohit was trolled and abused for his tweets, with some users asking him to leave the country, mocking his 'lack of work', calling him 'dhongi'.

The actor later said it was important to take out the essence of his opinion rather than slamming him.

Bhansali's 'Padmavati' is facing the wrath of various Rajput groups and political leaders, who have accused him of the "wrongful" depiction of queen Padmavati (played by Deepika) and "distorting historical facts".

Earlier scheduled to arrive in cinema halls on December 1, the release date of the film has been postponed by the makers till further notice.
