Bollywood not ready for Weinstein moment, says Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra may be a newbie to Hollywood, but in the wake of sexual harassment allegations engulfing everyone from Matt Lauer to Harvey Weinstein, she throws her support behind those who spoke up.
“I think it’s amazing,” she says. “Men and women are calling out powerful men, who can get away with anything. It’s not easy to do so. I guess, in America, they have had the courage and the support from everyone to do it.”
The actress adds that she doesn’t think Bollywood is ready for this now. This, despite the fact that her mother, Madhu Chopra, had indicated to us about a few situations PeeCee herself had faced in India.
“I don’t think that it’s an industry thing; I don’t think it’s an India thing. I don’t think we have been able to come together to do it (speak up) in such a big way yet,” Priyanka mulls.
Recently, a Mumbai tabloid stated that Priyanka was charging '1 crore per minute, for a six-minute performance at an awards function. But Priyanka denies this news. “You all know how these numbers come up. For one, it’s not a six-minute performance — it’s 12 minutes. I do not discuss my remuneration, ever. So let that be. The difference is that I’m coming down 700 feet from the Burj Khalifa to do the act,” Priyanka smiles.
Meanwhile, PeeCee’s friend from Hollywood, Meghan Markle, is all set to tie the knot with Prince Harry at the Windsor Castle on May 19. Rumour had it that Priyanka could be the maid of honour. However, the actress says she hasn’t spoken to her friend yet.
“I’m very happy for Meghan,” she says. “I haven’t spoken to her yet, but I’m really happy about it. I’m happy for both Meghan, as well as Anushka (Sharma). Both of them are dear friends of mine, and they’re having these fairytale weddings.”
