Mumbai: In the wake of a controversy over Bollywood actors Shilpa Shetty and Salman Khan allegedly using a casteist term during TV interviews in separate instances, the former has apologised on Twitter.
Ms Shetty tweeted, “Some of my words from an interview in the past have been misinterpreted. It was never said with the intent of hurting anyone’s feelings (sic).” She continued in another tweet, “I apologize if they have. I’m proud to belong to a country that boasts of diverse castes and creeds and I respect each one of them.’
The Rojgar Aghari Republic Party of India on Saturday filed a complaint in the Andheri police station stating that the duo had “intentionally insulted and intimidated, with intent to humiliate” by using derogatory comments denoting a scheduled caste community. The complainant, Navin Lade, the general secretary of the group, had demanded that an FIR be filed under sections of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The police had said action would be taken after ascertaining the facts.
