Sudhir Mishra to rework Devdas
Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, who has given Indian cinema some memorable movies, is all set with his next directorial venture, Daasdev.
Starring Richa Chadha as Paaro, Aditi Rao Hydari as Chandni and Rahul Bhat as Dev, the film is a modern take on the Sarath Chandra Chattopadhyay classic, Devdas. The movie is set in the modern times of hinterland India, against the backdrop of politics.
“I think it’s my right to use any work,” says Sudhir. “Everything is my heritage, so I can play with it, as long as I admit to it. I admit that I took Devdas, I took the three characters — Dev, Paro and Chandramukhi.”
He explains his take on it. “Ultimately, it becomes a film about power, as it gets in the way of love. It becomes this reverse journey. Because if Devdas is a journey from a noble person to a ‘das,’ this is the journey of a ‘das,’ a slave to his addictions and the dynastic ambitions of his family, to Dev,” he says.
