New on the telly!

Taboo
Ridley Scott plays executive producer for this new series that is all set to enthrall audiences. Tom Hardy plays James Keziah Delaney,  a man who is looking for vengeance for his father’s mysterious death and returns to London in 1814 after spending many years in Africa. The trailer itself sent chills down our spine with a solid but tiny performance by Hardy. Game of Thrones actors Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplinwill also be a part of the series.

Riverdale
One of the biggest surprises of 2016 was finding out that Archie and his gang would be returning to television with a star-packed cast. Although we’re unsure of when the show will release, we know it explores small town life and brings back all the rivalries and romances of the comics. It stars Marisol Nichols, KJ Apa and child-star Cole Sprouse in leading roles. The reputation of Archies comics is on the line, Riverdale, so this better be good!

Emerald City  
There have been many takes on the Land of Oz, but Emerald City might just take the cake on this one. When Dorothy is transported to Oz, she meets witches and magical creatures beyond her imagination on her way to meet the Wizard. But she also signals the beginning of a disastrous event, known as The Beast Forever. Unlike the usual, Dorothy doesn’t seem to be just a damsel in distress but a powerful lead. We can’t wait! The show will be premiering on Colors Infinity in January.

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is all set to bring eight episodes to Netflix on January 13. Adapted from the book of the same name, it follows the three Baudelaire kids who are still reeling from their parents’ mysterious death. They are shipped off to live with Count Olaf, played by Neil Patrick Harris, who tries to steal the fortune left behind for them through his schemes. Patrick Warburton plays the narrator Lemony Snicket, lending his expressive voice to the show.

Legion
The latest Marvel series to hit the screens in early 2017 is Legion. The show is about David Haller, who is diagnosed with schizophrenia, but is convinced by a fellow patient that the voices he hears are real. David is Professor Charles Xavier and Gabrielle Haller’s son from the X-Men universe. He becomes Legion, an anti-hero, who can take on other people’s personalities and harness different personalities. It’s fair to be extremely excited for this new show — and we’re hoping it does just as well, if not better, than other Marvel series.

Star Trek: Discovery
Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery promises to be ever Star Trek fan’s nerd dream. It is set a decade before the original series and is about the crew of the USS Discovery. Sonequa-Martin Green of The Walking Dead fame stars as the lieutenant commander of the group called Number One. Other co-stars include, Michelle Yeoh, Shazad Latif and Chris Obi. The show will premiere in May 2017.

American Gods
This series is one of the most awaited of them all. Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s award-winning book of the same name, the show is about an ex-convict, Shadow, who meets a mysterious man who only goes by the name of Wednesday. Wednesday also knows much more than he initially reveals about Shadow and his past. American Gods stars Gillian Anderson, Demore Barnes and Yetide Badaki. We’re hoping the show lives up to the hype that has been surrounding the premiere.

Twin Peaks
The creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, have left us hanging about the miniseries for one year now — but it’s finally confirmed that Twin Peaks will be making its entry in 2017. Mark also made a point to say that this is not a reboot or remake of the original series, but is set in the present. The passage of 25 years is integral to the plot as well. While a number of the original cast members will be reprising their roles, there are many new actors in the mix as well.

Back with a bang

Stranger Things
Possibly the biggest show of 2016, Stranger Things is all set for a second season this year. The internet collectively lost its mind when a rudimentary video announced the second innings of the show. From the pictures of the readings, we can tell that Eleven is coming back, but that Barb is definitely dead. The show should be airing sometime this summer, so get excited!

Black Mirror
Dark, twisted and jaw-dropping — Black Mirror is all of these things and more. The third season made its mark on 2016 and fans are grateful that the wait will soon be over for the next installment. The release date is set to be announced early this year and then we’ll be able to delve straight back into the dark pit that is this show.

Fargo
Award-winning series Fargo is making its comeback onto our televisions this year as well. While David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series, will be a series regular with his role as VM Vargas. He will be delivering some bad news to Emmit (Ewan McGregor). Carrie Coon is all set to be the leading lady of this season as Gloria Burgle, chief of Eden Valley police.

Master of None
It’s been a long and arduous wait for the next season of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None. The show previously earned a lot of recognition for its mix of comedy and drama, while also touching on issues like immigration and dating in the age of technology. Aziz said that he wanted a break to refill his head with good ideas, and it seems like the wait is finally over! Can 2017 get any better?
