Two seconds of shame
Body shamming, passing snide remarks on other celebrities or running down their own colleagues have been going on in the glamour industry for quite some time now and this for just a few minutes of attention and fame. With no concern on how these comments might affect the other person, a lot of celebrities have subjected fellow actresses to such tirades.
The most recent was when Bigg Boss 11 contestant and television actress passed comments on actress Sakshi Tanwar being squint-eyed and not very attractive. For these comments, Hina Khan, the Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai actress was at the firing end, when fellow TV actors and actresses slammed her for these comments.
In another incident, popular actress Kriti Sanon was body shamed by Bharavi Goswami of the Hate Story fame saying, “She is really behaving like a deranged woman. How did she become an actress? No headlight, no bumper. Even college students look better than this.”For this, she received serious backlash from the Bollywood film industry. Is ridiculing and body shamming someone just to get those few minutes of fame and attention worth it?
People belonging to the same industry need to support each other rather than pulling each other down. Tollywood actress Nidhi Subbaiah feels, “A place where actors support each other rather than pull them down would be a great place. People in reality shows are trained to go in and start fighting and bickering so that the TRP will go up. It is already bad enough that we are under constant observation by our fans and media. I was body shamed by people for gaining a few pounds at a time in my personal life where I was low and under.” Nidhi suggests that if people end up ruffling feathers just for 15 minutes of fame, then the best way to respond to this is to maintain a dignified silence.
Psychologist Meghana Singhal, says, “There is intense competition in today’s world and especially in showbiz. There are too many people and very few succeed, or end up in the limelight. Also, in showbiz, there is increasing mudslinging as people are not able to tolerate each other’s success.”
