Pankhuri Awasthy to play the role of a rape victim
Looking at actress Pankhuri Awasthy’s graph, one would certainly wonder if the roles the young performer has picked are too contrasting. It’s been quite a journey for the actress, from playing the glorious and courageous queen Razia Sultan in the TV show of the same name, to a rape victim in the new show Kya Kasoor Hai Amla Ka.
The series is a remake of the hugely popular Turkish series Fatmagul. With the rerun of the Turkish series, which airs simultaneously on a rival channel, we ask the actress what is the rationale behind remaking a show that’s been aired over and over again.
“It needs to be remade simply because something like this has never come on Indian television before. The channel has a very good reach, since it is a popular mainstream general entertainment one. So the story will reach the masses even in remote villages. It was necessary for the show to be made with Indian actors to make it relevant to audiences here,” says Pankhuri.
She further shares, “There have been so many films that raised the issue but not Indian television. And it’s not just rape, but many dynamic complex emotions attached to it. The making of the show is very real. It is not for me to decide whether everyone has watched Fatmagul or not. People in small villages may not have watched the channel airing it. They only watch mainstream channels, which is why the story is being remade.”
On the personal front, the actress was linked to her Razia Sultan co-star Ankit Arora, but she cleared the air on that matter saying that there is nothing brewing between them. On the contrary, the actress is dating another actor, whose identity she refuses to reveal. Opening up on her relationship, Pankhuri says, “We mutually decided that we don’t want to bring our relationship out in the open, as there are so many repercussions. We are in a happy zone right now. You sort of learn with time, and get accustomed to a person. Marriage is on the cards, but in the future. Right now, I am focusing on my show.”
