Designers and stylists give tips on what to wear for diwali parties

Diwali is around the corner and the parties are already being planned. But before you start digging into your wardrobe or head out to the mall, trying to find the best outfit for a Diwali party, take note of what some designers and stylists have to say.

Keeping up with the long kurta trend, fashion designer Anju Modi says, “The long, full-length kurtas and anarkalis are a great pick. I would say opt for a sharara with a kurta. Deepika Padukone can be seen wearing a lot of them in Bajirao Mastani and that’s definitely a hit this season. You can even have an eclectic mix of Indian and contemporary outfits.”

Anju adds, “Instead of going for heavily embroidered or embellished kurtas, I would say pick a bright colour. Red, orange, cobalt blue, indigo blue, marsala, purple are a few of the favourites this season.”

Stylist Indrakshi Ria Pattanaik agrees, “This Diwali, keep it colourful. Pop colours are really trending this season,” she says. But Indrakshi has advice that will take you away from the quintessential anarkali. “I have always believed in mix and match. Go a little boho this Diwali. Pair dhoti pants with a nice jacket, which has some work on it. You could even go for a skirt with a crop top. A classic look is an all-black one with smoky eyes and silver oxidised jewellery. Another ‘cool’ thing this season is to pair up a sari with dhoti pants or jeans.”

When it comes to attending parties, designers have one thing in common to say, “Remember, it’s a Diwali party and not a wedding”. So, keep it simple with the accessories. “Ear cuffs are a hot favourite. You can even try various hair accessories like a hair bun with a brooch,” says Anju.

But Indrakshi warns, “Avoid too much of a trail to your dress. Make sure you aren’t wearing something that is a flowy gown or has a lot of frills,” she says.
