Assam boys post upset win in last-8
Assam’s Betkuchi High School upset strong contenders Infant Jesus School, Goa, 1-0 in a fiercely contested quarter-final clash at the 54th Subroto Cup inter-school football in the capital. Meanwhile, Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Mizoram, booked their spots in the quarter-finals with a 11-1 thrashing of Coast Guard Public School, Daman, on Wednesday. Infant Jesus School, who fielded several players of the national U-14 squad, were expected to post an easy win but were let down by poor finishing and ultimately paid the price. They hogged the lion’s share of possession in the first half but the Assam defence held them at bay. The team from Assam were more composed in the second session and took a well deserved win, thanks to an opportunistic strike by Tridev Boro. Earlier, striker Lalampuia led the way with five goals as Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Mizoram, entered the last-eight stage from Pool H. Lalampuia has now taken pole position on the scoring charts with a total of 14 goals from three games. He is closely followed by Abu Thaheer of Infant Jesus Shool of Goa with eight goals.
