Manchester United legend backs Louis van Gaal

Manchester United legend and former captain Bryan Robson backed under-fire manager Louis van Gaal and said the club are heading in the right direction under his leadership.

The Dutchman’s style of play has been heavily criticised by Old Trafford legends, some calling it ‘boring’, but Robson felt there has been an improvement in recent games.

“When Louis van Gaal first came to Manchester United, he knew he had to steady the ship because they were out of the Champions League. Once we lost Alex Ferguson, we failed to get into Europe. When he came in, he was like ‘I want build a solid foundation to work for’, so, it’s difficult to score against United. But because of that philosophy, it has been difficult to get attacking free-flowing football like it was under Alex Ferguson,” said the former England skipper.

“Now, he has got that base set and I can see United improving as far as being bit more attacking given United fans like that type of football and enjoy it.”

The 59-year-old, who captained United to two consecutive English Premier League titles, three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup felt the onus to play attacking football, not only lies on the manager, but also with the players.

“At the end of the day, players have got to take responsibility as they are in the entertainment business. It is up to the players and not just the coach to play attacking adventures football and excite the fans,” said Robson, who was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 for his impact on the game as a player.

Robson said the emergence of players like Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy will boost England’s chances in the continental tournament.

“With arrival of players like Kane, Vardy, who have loads of enthusiasm and real passion to succeed, so, mentally wise England can do very well in the competition,” he said.
