Nehru junior hockey: Lucknow boys enter super league stage

St Mary’s High School of Simdega, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Senior Secondary School, Baba Bakala Sahib, and Lucknow’s Guru Gobind Singh Sports College qualified for the super league stage of the Steelbird International 45th Nehru junior hockey tournament at Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

In Pool A, St Mary’s High School pipped Amritsar’s Springdale Senior Secondary School, 2-0. Anurud Bhengra opened the scoring in the 19th minute while Alok Kujur added the second in the 45th minute.

In Pool C, the Baba Bakala Sahib boys rode on second half goals to down Kaoimari Higher Secondary School of Nagaon, Assam, 5-1.

Mirnal Roy put the Nagaon side ahead in the 14th minute before Harmanpreet negated the advantage seven minutes later.

The teams were locked 1-1 at the break before strikes from Harmanpreet (42nd), Harinder Singh (51st), Ramanpreet Singh (62nd) and Arshdeep Singh (63rd) carried SGTB School to a big win. Later, Guru Gobind Singh Sports College of Lucknow became the third team to advance to the next round, following their 2-2 draw with Mohali’s Government Model Senior Secondary School.

Prateek struck a brace for the Mohali side, while Shivam Anand and Shabuddin Ali scored for the Lucknow college.
