After it was announced that actor Johnny Depp was cast in the sequel to the movie-adaptation of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, the book’s author J.K. Rowling was hit with criticism from people online, for casting a “known wife abuser”.
Depp, who was accused of being violent with his estranged wife Amber Heard, was panned on Twitter, with one user writing, “hello @jk_rowling @FantasticBeasts the Harry Potter universe is all about being against the abuse of power and yet you cast a known abuser (sic)” while others said they wouldn’t be watching the next movie. Others also pointed out the double standards in Hollywood when it came to women: “Winona Ryder stole something once and her career plummeted. Johnny Depp abused his wife & he continues to get roles. i love double standards (sic)”.
