Back to the 90s
The 90s are a delightful time to revisit — the music it belted out, the entertainment it offered and of course, the style statements it made. Think Alicia Silverstone’s flannels from Clueless, and the body glitter on the Spice Girls, or even those colourful jelly sandals that made a splash everywhere. It may have given rise to a few questionable trends but then there have been some favourites too. Thankfully, for those who like to reverse the clock — at least in terms of style, the fashion industry is always time-travelling. Chokers, off-shoulders tops, high waisted jeans and even ankle length shoes are making a comeback, bringing back in vogue 90s fashion.
Amrin of Dimple & Amrin points out that the fashion industry thrives on time cycles. She says, “Fashion tends to have its own cycle and some of the leading fashion houses collaborate with celebrities to revive fashion trends consistently. For instance, Alessandro Michele from Gucci has revamped the brand by bringing the bohemian look back in vogue.”
Amrin adds, “From bell bottoms to patched denim jackets, these trends inspire the rest of the fashion industry, including fast fashion retailers, who help get it to the mass market at an affordable price, thereby leading to mass adoption of fashion trends.”
Chokers, bell bottoms and mom jeans are some of the most prominent 90s fashion revival items. Mom jeans with their high waists let all the tummy tucking worries take a backseat. Pair them with sneakers and a flannel shirt, and voila! You’re a classic 90s babe. One more thing that characterised the 90s is its denim overdose. Designer Parul J. Maurya is completely for the denim on denim look today. “It’s part of the ’90s fashion revival scene in 2016 — whether it’s jeans with a high waist, ripped denims or a denim shirt paired with jeans; no one is going to look down on you for wearing jeans with a denim shirt,” she puts forth.
The constant rotation of fashion, clothes and accessories adds a healthy twist to the fashion environment, feels jewellery designer Shillpa Purii. “The 80s and 90s are coming back for good! They are bringing back some of the most iconic accessories with them such as chokers, crop tops and off-shoulders. And the pairing is easy too. You can pair off-shoulder tops and dresses with chokers and sneakers. You needn’t stick to just one type of choker either. You can choose from satin ribbon chokers to crystal and stiff chokers,” she says.
