A blissful retreat

“Because here’s where you’ll find a gigantic lake reflecting a sky full of stars surrounded by majestic mountain peaks,” said a friend when asked why should I visit Malshej in particular for a weekend getaway. And when Maharashtra’s famous weekend escape got its first luxury boutique resort Saj By The Lake, we had even more reason to head to Malshej.

After a three-hour drive that offered a scenic view of the Sahyadris, we reached our destination, greeted by plush manicured lawns and a big gateway. Our spacious, well-furnished room offered a panoramic view of the mountains, the lake and a nearby farm too and we took a fancy to the open-air garden inside the washroom. The journey had left us tired and hungry and after a quick shower, we made our way to the colossal dining room that was lit by gigantic lantern clouds. A separate section featuring local Maharastrian delicacies piqued our taste buds. With the spicy thecha, methi pitale, crispy jowar bhakri, bharwan baingan, bharli vaangi, dahi kadi and a subtle nachani shorba the menu packed a punch. The nectarous gajar halwa was a perfect finish to the fiery meal. We were later told that all the vegetables are freshly plucked from a nearby farm.

Refreshed after a hearty meal we embarked on an evening walk to the lake, and we reached the banks of Pushpawati, (Pimpalgaon Joga Dam). Flanked by the mountains, the water glistened with the last rays of the sun. Chaperoned by the resort guide, we went on our mini exploration trek, which led us to a nearby ancient Lord Shiva temple touted to be over 1,000 years old. The locals hail it for its mystical powers. It was built by Raja Harishchandra and witnesses a tremendous turnout every year on Maha Shivratri. Our amiable guide willingly answered all our questions as we explored the relics still untouched by the madness of city life. We decided to spend the rest of our evening star gazing by the resort’s poolside.

Choosing to spend a weekend at this resort brought along with it many surprises. For adrenaline junkies, the poolside area offers sports like zorbing, archery and crossbow. The ambience is such that it will nudge you to step out of the cosy indoors and explore the adjoining areas. Popular among hikers, and nature lovers, Malshej is famous for its trekking trails, waterfalls, lakes, and historic forts.

About 28 km from our resort is Lenyadri and Ozar — two of the Ashtavinayak shrines, a set of the eight prominent Ganesha shrines in Western Maharashtra in Junnar district. Delighted by our newfound wisdom, we decided to explore further. Our ride was given company by fresh vineyards all along the plains...you can stop by and get yourself freshly plucked grapes from the farm owner. Though we saw Lenyadri blooming on top of the hill, the journey was far from over. We climbed 300 stairs to reach the mountain-top that houses the temple in a cave along with 30 other rock-cut Buddhist caves. Palanquin service is also available for those who need a lift.

Back after our temple expedition, a lip smacking spread of pit-cooked dum biryani, gobi mutter, kothambir wadi, paneer tikka and moong-dal halwa greeted us. After savouring the epicurean meal we buckled up for our journey back home. What we were offered and all that we experienced was more than what we had expected. Saj By The Lake has many ingredients of a grand surprise. Nestled in the lofty hills of Western Ghats, it is a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
