This weekend, acquaint yourself with the city’s Portuguese identity, as Vibgyor, a group run by photographers, in association with MumbaiOGraphy hosts a photo walk in Matharpacady, a “village” in Mazgaon. The walk will begin at St. Gloria Church and end at Gunpowder Lane.

St. Gloria’s Church, which is famous for its Gothic architectural styles, was designed by Portuguese Franciscans in 1632 and is currently, the only church in the city to have a heritage status. Next on the itinerary is Matharpacady or Mathar Pakhadi, a quaint Goan village, straight out of those scenic picture postcards from Goa. Indranil Mukherjee, the organiser who is excited for this section of the photo walk says, “This village is almost 300 years old. The bungalows there still have the typical wood Portuguese-influenced bungalows, with sprawling porches and verandahs.”

Another landmark on the photo walk, the Gun Powder Lane, is popular for its ship-breaking and ironworks industries. The area may house dingy tin godowns and factories, but it is steeped in remarkable history. Indranil says, “This walk is recommended for people who want to understand the Portuguese influences in the city. I am not sure if many photographers are aware about the Gun Powder Lane, which is a distinct place to shoot in the city. For a photographer who loves capturing architecture, streets and bazaars, this walk offers myriad opportunities.”

The walk will start at Regal Restaurant and Bakery, on July 24, 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm For more information, call on 9920773284 or write to vibgyorfob@gmail.com
