What happens when Shakespeare meets his audience in the 21st century The speeches and traditional costumes give way to boisterous music with a rock and roll effect. U.K based Filter Theatre will be reinterpreting the Bard’s classic comedy Twelfth Night for the contemporary audience in the city today.

A stage will be presented in a concert-like setting. The team reveals that with this play, the are looking to experiment with music. Simon Reade, the producer of the play says, “Twelfth Night is wonderfully lyrical and musical in its own way. You don’t need anything else apart from music and love and a live band to retell the story.”

Staying true to the original tale was not much of a challenge for the troupe. Dan Poole who plays the character of Sir Toby Belch elaborates, “The irony with Shakespeare’s work is you can’t do anything that hasn’t been done before. The stories are so well written that they are easy to retell. Through this play we are trying to cross over the boundaries between music, drama and movement. I’m sure if Shakespeare would be alive today he would have made Twelfth Night in a musical, anarchic way.”

With a heady mix of a riotous gig and a dramatic narrative, Filter Theatre has been wowing theatre aficionados across the country as a part of their eight-city tour in association with the British Council, Simon says, “We are a music and sound based company. We have rehearsed only for two weeks and we believe in spontaneity and constantly improvising. Our tour in India has been exhausting but we have had great fun in every city for different reasons. We are excited to perform in the New York of India,” says Simon.
