Srinagar: An Army officer posted in Siachen glacier area which is regarded as the world’s highest battlefield, has reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a service weapon.

A report received here from Leh, the main town of Jammu and Kashmir’s eastern Ladakh region, said that Colonel Rohit Singh Solanki of 6 MAHAR regiment shot himself dead with the service rifle of a soldier with the Army’s ‘Quick Reaction Team (QRT)’ near Paratpur of Nubra subdivision.

The report said that the QRT personnel quickly shifted the seriously injured officer to a nearby Army health facility where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The official sources here said that the concerned police station has taken the cognizance of the incident and launched investigations to know why the officer took such an extreme step.

Siachen at a height of 19, 600 feet above sea level is known as the world’s highest battleground where India and Pakistan have fought intermittently since April 1984.

It has also been the scene of many natural disasters, leaving hundreds of soldiers dead or maimed.
