Bhopal: A senior officer of Madhya Pradesh government has landed in trouble for observing his birthday in “style”.

A video clip showing a tesildar, posted in Indore district, cutting his birthday cake with a long sword amid celebratory firing went viral in the social media on Monday prompting his higher authority to take note of it.

Indore district collector Nishant Warwade has asked the “birthday boy”, tehsildar Tapish Pandey, to explain his conduct in person, official sources told this newspaper.

The local sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Pratul Sinha, who was also present on the occasion, has also been asked to brief Mr Warwade on the “incident”, sources added.

According to official sources, Mr Pandey celebrated his birthday on December 30 by cutting a huge cake with a sword presented by one of the guests invited to the occasion. A celebratory gunfire also marked the birthday celebration.

Sources said some local politicians reportedly belonging to both the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress were also present on the occasion.

The tehsildar, however, pleaded his innocence before the media, saying that he hardly knew the person who did the celebratory firing. Celebratory gunfire is almost a common sight in functions in Madhya Pradesh.

A recent incident in which some students were seen firing from AK-47 assault rifles during the celebration of 125th foundation day of the famed Holkar Science College in Indore had caused commotions in the academic circle in MP.

Some youth, believed to be students of the college, were seen hoisting the deadly assault rifles and then firing in the air while celebrating the occasion in the college in June, 2016. A video showing them firing from their guns had then gone viral.
