Union Budget 2017: Senior citizens to get smart cards

A beginning will be made through a pilot in 15 districts during 2017-18, says Arun Jaitley.

New Delhi: Senior citizens are set to get and also earn 8 per cent interest on savings through Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), finance minister announced on Wednesday. Unveiling the Budget in Parliament, Mr Jaitley said that for senior citizens, Aadhar-based Smart Cards containing their health details will be introduced. “A beginning will be made through a pilot in 15 districts during 2017-18,” he said.

Lauding the proposal, the healthcare industry said that such digital penetration could be key to affordable and accessible healthcare to senior citizens. Other than the healthcare initiative for senior citizens, the finance minister announced that the LIC will implement a scheme for senior citizens to provide assured pension, with a guaranteed return of 8 per cent per annum for 10 years.
