INX Media case: ED summons Karti Chidambaram January 11
New Delhi: Trouble seems to be brewing for Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has asked him to appear before the agency for questioning on January 11 in connection with its investigation into the INX-Media case.
Sources said the investigating officer of the case will record his statement under the provisions of the prevention of money laundering act. The Central probe agency had registered a case against Karti, the son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, and others in May last year.
It had registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against the accused named in the CBI complaint, including Karti, INX media and its directors — Peter and Indrani Mukerjea — and others. The ECIR was registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). They said the ED will probe the alleged “proceeds of crime” generated in this case.
Karti is alleged to have received Rs 3.5 crore from Mumbai-based INX media for helping it get Foreign Investment Promotion Board’s (FIPB) clearance when it was run by the Mukerjeas.
